Learning an instrument is something that I think most people have a desire to do – even though most of us don’t really have the motivation to learn it properly. I think the problem is that we all like the idea of being able to play an instrument well, but don’t like the fact that you have to go through a lot of training and practice before you even get to a level that doesn’t hurt people’s ears!
I’ve decided that this year I’m going to start learning an instrument and I’m also going to attempt to learn a new language at the same time. I already speak pretty good French and enough Spanish to get by, but it would be great to learn some German or maybe something more difficult. If I can do both at the same time I’ll be surprised but I thought I’d give it a go!
The question is which type of instrument do I want to learn. I’ve always wanted to play the guitar, but I think that’s quite a common choice and it’s not easy to start. I’ve heard that bass guitar is a bit easier to pick up (although just as hard to master) so that might be a good choice too. I’m not really interested in classical instruments, and drums don’t grab me because of the lack of melody, so it’s either a bass or possibly a piano.
