I’m not usually a fan of military books, but I’ve recently been reading the And Mcnab series of books and started to enjoy them. They’re great for a quick, easy read when you don’t feel like anything more complicated, and they’re usually entertaining too. I’ve only read three or four of the books so I can’t comment on the whole series, but if you have a passing interest in these sorts of books then I’d give them a go.
The basic stories follow an ex SAS solider called Nick Stone. He has a variety of problems – mainly caused by his own bad decisions – and a book often follows a particular mission for the “firm” along with the fall out afterwards. The best thing about the books is the insight you get into how an SAS solider thinks and works, as Andy Mcnab has been there. This is why the books feel so authentic, although I think that they do go over the top a bit at some points.
On the other side of the coin, the books are never going to win any serious literary awards. The plots are usually simple, which makes for an entertaining read but nothing more than that. If you want a deep storyline with lots of characters then the books aren’t for you.
If you’re looking for a quick read of something that doesn’t take up too much brain power, however, then the books are perfect. They are well written, interesting and I’ll definitely be buying more in the future.
