The Perils Of Buying Watches

May 20th, 2011 -

Who would of thought that buying a watch could be so difficult? I was talking to a friend the other day about how I was going to get a new one soon. He was horrified when I said I was just planning to go on eBay and pick the first one that was within my price range and that I liked. Apparently there are a huge amount of replicas online – I didn’t realize!

The end result is that I’m going to have to spend a lot more time looking for a watch than I originally thought. I’m looking to spend around $500 – not enough for something like a Rolex but it should be a big enough budget to get a decent watch. The problem is that I don’t know anything about watches and I certainly don’t know how to tell a fake from the real article.

According to my friend the best way to spot a fake is to compare the pictures with those from the manufacturers website. I’ve done a bit of reading on the subject though and this can be difficult to do accurately unless you’re an expert because the replicas are so good.

In the end I’ll probably just buy it from a shop I can trust. It’ll cost more but at least I’ll know I’m getting the real thing for my money. There would be nothing worse than trying to sell the watch in the future only to find out that it isn’t worth anything!
